Beyond the traditional indoor volleyball competitions, FIVB also oversees beach volleyball and snow volleyball tournaments. Here are some of the prestigious tournaments organized by FIVB:
1. World Championship
The FIVB World Championship, the pinnacle of volleyball excellence, debuted in 1949 for men and 1952 for women. Held every four years, the most recent editions took place in 2018 and 2020. Traditionally, 24 national teams have participated, but in a historic move, the 2026 edition will see 32 teams competing for glory.
2. World Cup
The FIVB World Cup, initiated in 1965 for men and 1973 for women, is another coveted event in the volleyball calendar. The World Cup tournaments are held every four years, with the most recent editions taking place in 2019. Unlike the World Championship, the World Cup features a more limited field, with only 12 teams participating.
3. Club World Championship
This annual event showcases the best club teams from around the globe. The competition welcomes eight teams, each representing their respective continents, including the AVC Club Volleyball Championship (Asia), African Clubs Championship (Africa), South American Volleyball Club Championship (South America), and CEV Champions League (Europe). Additionally, one team from North America, one host team, and one wild card entry complete the lineup.
4. FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championship
Beach volleyball enthusiasts eagerly anticipate this biennial event, which first graced the sands of Los Angeles in 1997. With 48 teams participating, the championship employs a group-stage format followed by knockout rounds, making it a thrilling spectacle for fans.
5. FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour
Launched in 1989 for men and 1992 for women, the World Tour is an annual competition that traverses the globe, featuring the world’s top beach volleyball players.
The International Volleyball Federation’s enduring commitment to the growth and development of volleyball on a global scale is evident through its diverse range of tournaments.
